Curiosity killed the cat...or at least gave a trip to the Animal ER!

Yesterday, Pete went out in the morning, as usual, and slept under the BBQ grill a majority of the day. Probably to hide from the murderous mockingbird who is out for his blood (or is at least leaving him with little pecks here and there). Why he doesn't just catch it and get it over with I don't know...since he caught one while Gram was here! He obviously liked having her here since he brought her a feathered present.

Anyway, I had gone out on the porch a little after 5...he came out from under the grill all purry purry and lovey. Then he saw something over in the grass of the driveway and went off to investigate. He returned 20-30 min. later limping on his left foot!! I promptly pick him up to go inside and inspect, thinking maybe he picked up a sticker or something.

Well, by the time we got back to 'his bedroom' (the extra guest room) I hadn't felt a sticker. I laid him on the bed and proceeded to inspect. He began to growl...that don't touch it, it hurts kinda growl...if you keep touching it I'm gonna have to smack you down!

So we wrangled him into the kitty carrier (take off the lid, insert cat, re-lid promptly!). Off we go to find a vet, crossing our fingers that one will be open. Ours was closed. 61st street was closed. We had no phone with us, so thought to just go in the morning. By the time we got back home, unloaded the kitty and let him out his paw was getting really swollen. So we looked up the 24 hour veterinary ER on the mainland. We were still deciding if we should go (and had NOT used any key dog words that we can think of) when Grace goes up to the front of the house, gets her collar, and comes back to us!!!! We decide we should go. Obviously.

We wrangle Pete back into the carrier after dragging him out from under the bed (he wasn't falling for that again!) and set off for exit 22 on the mainland to the clinic....both of us realizing at some point that we've never taken an animal to an Animal ER or for that matter gone to the ER ourselves. We are hoping the price won't be too outrageous! Warren is driving and quoting how much it costs for people...I'm thinking it's a cat!! It can't even be close to the same amount!!

We arrive to find a sign on their door that says they'd moved!! Luckily it was only across the parking lot.

We are buzzed in...(b/c someone would want to rob a vet ER? run off with another persons pet? stick 'em up the ferret is mine! lol) Anyway, we fill out some paperwork for a guy with worse roots that me and a bad box of hair color, sign off that we will actually pay for the $90 initial fee and not run off, notice that at some point we'll be given a quote and that payment plans are offered! Then we are shown to a little waiting room. We wait. And wait. We are low on the triage list.

Finally a tech comes in and Pete comes out. He's inspected and declared that his paw/leg might get shaved to locate the injury!! She leaves and I'm left holding the kitty...on that small, cold metal table you see above.

And we wait.

Next a vet, Dr. Zoo....seriously, comes in to look Petey over. Poke. Prod. Rub. I'm holding him up in the air against me...his back paws on the table while she feels of his leg and listens to me tell what little bit I know about what has happend. She declares it could be one of several things...a bee sting (we have bees in the front shrubs, they bloom apparently), a cat bite...injury could have been as recent as the night before and swelling wouldn't have happend right away (we did hear growling and hissing Friday night), or a sting from something else (wasp, spider, snake??). So she's going to treat him to cover all those possibilities with an antibiotic (apparently cat's have nasty mouths) given 2x a day for the next 2 weeks, benadryl 3x a day for a while, and a shot of something for pain and swelling.

2 hours later and $170 dollars lighter we leave with medicines, instructions to stop and buy liquid benadryl, and firm convition of house confinement at least for the next 2 weeks. Pete is keeping an eye on the door.

Vegas baby, Vegas!

Warren and I set out last Thursday for Las Vegas to spend our one-year anniversary on vacation there. I skipped school on Friday (hopefully there was a sub!!) and Gram flew down to pet-sit the animals...(so far I hear they are all snuggling at night! ha).

We arrived on-time but got in late Thurs. night and stayed at the Tropicana this trip (last time was at the MGM). I've decided I prefer staying on this end of the strip, easier access to leaving for the airport. Something must've been going on this weekend b/c room rates at other places were a bit higher (although next time I've already decided we are so staying in the castle one across the street...I think it's the Excalibur...b/c hello! a castle! so much cooler!). Our room was nice sized, but our door was a bit tricky...sometimes it would lock and sometimes it wouldn't! We kept annoying security by having him run up to the room to lock the door. Then yesterday sometime the elevators began going SUPER slow...so bad that they began letting guests use the service elevators too!! So, the Tropicana: a fun cheaper place to play, but don't stay...at least not until they get a few things fixed!

Friday night we went to see Zumanity which was very sexy, bawdy, and had lots of dirty humor. Don't go to this with your parents! Or co-workers! :-) It was a more audience interactive and naked side of cirque de soleil.

Saturday night we ate the Bellagio Buffet (mmmmmm...) before going to see Wayne Brady. HIL-arious!! His show is different every night depending upon what the audience gives him as ideas, etc. Partial improv and partial planned, but VERY funny.

Unfortuantly, I couldn't talk Warren into going to see Tony & Tina's Wedding...I personally thought it would be very funny and appropriate as an anniversary thing to see...but oh well...maybe next time :-)

We've had fun gambling like we always do...we bring a set amount to 'play' with everyday...the past two days...not so hot for me...but at least I broke even today! :-) I did learn to do a couple of table games...I 'm always so nervous about doing those...like I won't know how or do something wrong. But I played Casino War (just like the real card game War only you are betting on if you get the highest card or not) and Let it Ride (sort of like making a poker hand but you aren't playing against other players...just against the house, in a way. I had fun at a lot of different slots and like the electronic roulette. :-)

OH!! Yesterday Warren chased American Idol people like a real paparazzi!! We were at the Mirage and stood outside for like 30 min. waiting for them to show up and I got tired of it and went to go play Price is Right, but Warren stayed w/ the camera and got some cool pix!! So check us out for maybe being in the crowd footage...I don't even know who the 4 finalists are right now, I haven't watched this round at all...but Warren likes it anyways. He said that when they finally got there, people were going crazy and snapping pictures and stuff like crazy. I'll have him write about it b/c it will be funnier. He missed his calling as a creative writer, so stay tuned for his story and pictures.

I'm sure other stuff happend, but I can't think right now and am in the airport at a charging terminal thingy killing time...so chat later! Bye!
